Even PTs Get Injured

Even PTs Get Injured

Time to practice what I preach!
Last Tuesday during a track workout I (Josh) pulled up in the last interval with some foot pain. So I decided to call it a day and see what was going on, maybe it's just a cramp. Well, over the next couple days I proceeded to limp around and the walls came closing in. I have a whole set of races coming up in the next few months and the worry and doubt about whether or not this is going to be a short term or long term problem are flowing in my head.
What am I doing to work on it?
Active rest: this is the foundation of acute pain. Our bodies need some time to reset and heal, but this doesn't mean don't do anything. So I am doing Zwift rides and lower quarter strength and stability work in pain-minimal positions. This means load the areas you can load without spiking pain level to provide blood flow and facilitate healing.
Additional modalities: Being inside Swift Recovery I have had the benefit of using some additional services to facilitate healing. PEMF and TECAR are go to's in my book for acute issues to stimulate the bodies natural systems of healing. I've also done some trigger point dry needling (very hard to perform on yourself) for some direct effect on the muscles involved.
Focusing on the positive: This is honestly the hardest one for me. Running is a huge part of my life, from work to social life, it is a near central aspect. Not being able to do what you love doing is hard. So I have worked toward finding ways to fill those times I would be training with other activities like time with friends or catching up on some books, and also sleeping in.
It's all about perspective
Short and long term injuries can be a time to reset and reorganize. We can use the time away from our sport to work on things we might be neglecting like strength work, mobility, and cross training. We can also find ways to prioritize some things outside our sport like family time, social outings and overall self care. But with that we do need to be proactive about getting better. It's easy to get down (Hi its me, writing this for me as well), but change your perspective and get after what you can do!
Let us help
Injuries can be unexpected and unpredictable, but if we can get on top of them and make an appropriate plan we can make the response more expected and predictable. We can start treatment early and get things feeling better so you can have a plan for the path forward. And if you need to vent we can be a therapist as well as a physical therapist if you need us to be.
