Don't Call it a Comeback!

Tuesday marks 6 weeks from the time I injured my foot, and I thought I'd provide an update! I am glad to say I am back to running and no longer experiencing any pain! Here are the things I did and some things I probably should have done better.

Quick synopsis of the injury: I did a tremendous amount of speed workout over the summer training for 5ks and after a fun filled week hiking mountains in Canada I came back and overdid it with high mileage, soccer games and a 1/2 marathon time trial. Feeling good causes us to make mistakes sometimes. I felt a give in my foot during a track interval and was done running for a while. Never got a confirmed MRI but stress fracture of the 3rd metatarsal was a given based on signs and symptoms.

What I did that helped!

  • Cross training with Zwift (cycling) and some swimming (should have gone more but I am terrible at it)

  • Kept up with weight bearing as tolerated. This one is tricky as not every stress fracture allows for weight bearing. Luckily for me a boot was not needed. Bones grow through weight bearing forces so being able to walk on it was great!

  • Modalities- I used TECAR and PEMF quite a bit over the first few weeks to stimulate healing and speed up the process as best I could. There are really good medical journal studies for bone injuries with these tools!

What probably could have been better

  • Nutrition- I already don't have the best diet but I admittedly felt less bad about eating more junk type foods since I didn't have to get up early and run.

  • Strength training- As my weight lifting friend told me I had a golden opportunity to get buff and work on my bench press. Hindsight is 20/20

  • Mental state- Not running as a runner is tough and I definitely let it get in my head for a while. So sorry if I was irritable during that time.

Next steps

So this gets into a bit of do as I say not as I do. I have a pretty decent aerobic and fitness base so getting back into shape for me should be a bit quicker than most. I'll have plenty of time to train for marathons coming up, Rocket City for fun and Houston for goal race, but I have to follow my plan and ease back into mileage and be really solid before pushing effort and loading. Get back into the groove with strength work and nutrition and keep up with my own PT as I move forward.

I am so happy to be back to running and hope to see some of you on the roads or trails soon!

Josh
